Why are we called Resurrection PEC?
At Resurrection PEC, we like to say that “We are an Easter people”. But, why?
We believe that part of the difficulty in Western Christianity for both Protestants and Catholics for the last 1,000 years has been this emphasis on Christianity as being all about how we can get saved. We’ve taught people that what really matters in Christianity is how we get to heaven, and thus the focus becomes all about “me” and “my salvation.” People get stuck there in this self-centered focus.
But, the Holy Scriptures is much more holistic than this for it teaches us that humans are called to be responsible and wise stewards over all of God’s creation. When we observe a world that is in chaos, God’s church should care. And, the Bible tells us quite clearly that the purpose of God rescuing humans from whatever fate they might have is not just for their own sake – but for what God can do through people’s lives. The whole point of Christianity and of its Good News is how the world can be improved through the lives of redeemed Christ-followers, who are united to Christ in His life, death and resurrection, as they are used by God to reconcile people to Himself and to one another.
Once we get that into our minds and hearts, we realize that the everyday tasks which God entrusts to us – whether we are called to work in full time ministry, or to be an executive for a corporation or to be a stay-at-home parent – are to be carried out in light of God’s new world. Put differently, what we do here on earth right now truly matters for “we are an Easter people”!
